PSU joins national public media network to bring university knowledge to society

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) has joined forces with 10 leading Thai universities to establish the Higher Education Public Media Network, a collaborative initiative aimed at strengthening public communication by delivering reliable, high-quality knowledge from universities to society. The network seeks to promote media literacy, expand public access to credible information, and address the challenges of the digital era through multi-platform public media.

The initiative was officially launched at a press conference on July 24, 2026, at the TK. Palace & Convention Hotel in Bangkok. The event was presided over by Dr. Chanthaphat Khamkhokgruad, Acting Deputy Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), who emphasized the vital role of public media in providing accurate, educational, and trustworthy information that supports lifelong learning and improves quality of life.

Dr. Chanthaphat noted that the collaboration extends beyond co-producing media content. It represents a shared commitment to transforming public media into a platform for lifelong learning, promoting professional media standards and ethics, strengthening media literacy, and helping society address the growing challenges of artificial intelligence, misinformation, and disinformation through credible knowledge generated by higher education institutions.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Teerasak Jindabot, Director of Global Affairs and Corporate Communication Center at Prince of Songkla University, explained that PSU has played a pioneering role in inter-university media collaboration for decades. The network traces its origins to the University Radio Direct Network, first launched on January 1, 1998, through cooperation between Chulalongkorn University Radio and PSU Hat Yai Radio Station. Over the past 28 years, the network has expanded to include 10 universities and 11 radio stations, serving audiences across 54 provinces.

Throughout its history, the network has delivered educational content covering research, science, technology, healthcare, environmental sustainability, arts and culture, career development, and community well-being, becoming an important bridge between university knowledge and the public.

Recognizing changes in media consumption and digital technology, the network has now evolved into the Higher Education Public Media Network, expanding beyond radio to produce content across television, digital platforms, and social media. The initiative will also facilitate the sharing of expertise, personnel, technology, and media resources among member universities.

The network brings together ten leading universities: Chulalongkorn University, Prince of Songkla University, Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University, Kasetsart University, Thammasat University, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, Naresuan University, Mahasarakham University, and Nakhon Phanom University, together with PSU Pattani Campus Radio Station, creating a nationwide public media network that reaches every region of Thailand.

Through this collaboration, each university will showcase its unique expertise in areas such as medicine and public health, science and technology, agriculture and food, environmental sustainability, innovation, the creative economy, arts and culture, and community development. The content will be presented in accessible, engaging formats while contributing to the continued development of national standards for public media production.

For Prince of Songkla University, participation in the network reflects its role as a leading center for knowledge creation and innovation in Southern Thailand. The University will leverage research and expertise from all faculties and campuses to communicate valuable knowledge to the public through trusted media platforms, creating tangible benefits and positive impacts for society.

The establishment of the Higher Education Public Media Network marks an important milestone in collaboration among Thai universities, strengthening public communication, fostering a learning society, promoting media literacy, and contributing to the development of a transparent, resilient, and sustainable public media ecosystem, with Prince of Songkla University playing a key role in driving this national initiative.
