PSU partners with OIC-COMSTECH to advance academic, research, and innovation collaboration across OIC member states
Prince of Songkla University (PSU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) to promote collaboration in academia, research, innovation, and human capacity development with institutions across the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The signing ceremony, held online on 28 April 2026, was chaired by Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of OIC-COMSTECH, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thakerng Wongsirichot, Vice President for Academic and International Affairs on behalf of the President of Prince of Songkla University. The event was witnessed by H.E. Mr. Rongvudhi Virabutr, Ambassador of Thailand to Pakistan along with senior representatives from both parties.
COMSTECH serves as the OIC’s standing committee responsible for scientific and technological cooperation. It plays a key role in promoting, coordinating, and advancing collaboration in science, technology, and innovation among member states, with a focus on strengthening research capacity, facilitating technology transfer, developing human resources, and building international academic networks.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thakerng Wongsirichot stated that this partnership reflects the shared commitment of both parties to advancing academic, scientific, and innovation collaboration at the international level. It also serves as a strategic platform to connect PSU with leading institutions across OIC member states.
PSU is committed to promoting research, innovation, and capacity building in key areas of regional and global importance, including health and medical sciences, artificial intelligence and digital technologies, halal science, and sustainable development. These priority areas align closely with COMSTECH’s mission to strengthen scientific and technological networks among member countries.
Under this MoU, both parties are expected to initiate joint research projects, facilitate knowledge exchange, and enhance human resource development. The agreement will also support mobility programs for students, researchers, and academic staff, thereby fostering sustained academic engagement and delivering tangible outcomes.
This collaboration has been strongly supported by the Royal Thai Embassy in Islamabad which has played important roles in facilitating coordination and cooperation. The contribution underscores the significance of science diplomacy in strengthening relations between Thailand and Pakistan, as well as enhancing ties with OIC member states.
The MoU signing marks a significant milestone in establishing a strategic, results-oriented partnership. It is expected to generate long-term benefits for academic, scientific, technological, and societal development at the international level.
